A baghouse filter is the means of dust collection. When it comes to buying filter media, customers often can’t decide. Even if they know what type of filter they need, they can’t choose the proper size they need for the baghouse.

Tips to Choose the Right Filter for your Baghouse

Though a bit tricky, it’s not difficult to choose the exact filter for your baghouse. Here are the tips that would make your selection process easy.

  • Selection of filter media

At the onset, you should need to choose the filter media. It depends on the purpose of its use. While choosing the media, consider a few things. Do the bags have to withstand extreme temperatures? Which purpose will the filter serve? Is the filter able to endure different chemical reactions of the dust particles? Can the media prevent the abrasion of dust particles?

The performance of the bag depends on its efficiency to withstand its working environment. Unless you select the right media, the filter can’t efficiently eliminate dust particles from the fabric. Filters are usually made from woven felts, non-woven felts, synthetics (thermoplastics or thermoset) like polypropylene, polyphenylene and polyester, and natural fibers.

  • Measurement of filter

As the next step, measurement of the filter bag is important. Unless the measurement is proper, the filter can’t act at its best. Over the years, the dust collectors have been amended owing to changes in the process of baghouse reconfiguration. In the case of a customized baghouse, the OEM configuration won’t work. And so, you need to take proper measurements before placing the order for new filter bags. You may remove one of the existing bags installed, and take the measurement accordingly. This ensures that the new bag will be the same as the bags presently are being used in the dust collector. However, before removing the bag in-use, take proper precautionary measures. While taking measurements, consider the flat width, diameter, and length.

  • Top and bottom construction – The construction of the top and bottom of the bags may involve various configurations. The selection of the configuration depends on what kind of cleaning process your dust collector uses. Shaker, pulse-jet, and reverse air are the most common dust collector filters. Shaker collectors are meant for mechanical cleaning. They are still used in older applications where uncertain downtime doesn’t make any issue. Pulse-jet collectors or reverse jet collectors are most common. They are used in almost every industry segment. They are divided into top load and bottom load units. Reverse air dust collectors are mostly used in huge air handling units like a cement plant or a power generation plant. These dust collectors are also known as structural bags.
  • Optional choices – Apart from the above steps, there are some more for you. As it comes to choosing a filter for baghouse, you will find some additional options. You can add ground wires, wear cuffs, and special finishes to the filter. Ground wires work on a specific area of the filter. They are used for static dissipation. Wear cuffs help to combat abrasion at the bag’s bottom. You can add different finish options to the filter media while it is being manufactured. Ask any reputable fabric manufacturer in India to help you with your filter media selection process.

As it comes to choosing the filter media for the baghouse, you need to choose the filter media beforehand. Then it comes to taking the proper measurement. Top and bottom construction also have an important role. You may add optional devices for better output.
